<image:caption>TERRA + is a Landscape Architectural practice that works independently and in collaboration with other Landscape Architects and various disciplines to ensure that projects are environmentally responsible, resilient and sustainable. This allows for a wide range of projects across a wide range of scales and levels of detail design. Through expertise in the field and collaboration TERRA + offers the ability to deal with projects ranging from Masterplan development, both urban and rural, right down to landscape architectural detail design. We have a clear understanding that for any project to develop positively it has to be rooted in its context, this does not only relate to the natural environment but the urban context too. Whilst engaging in practical aspects of projects, the aspects of research remain a strong element in the office, with design-based questions arising and challenges explored on an academic level. We believe that it is through the trans-disciplinary approach that a project is truly successful. Design-lead research in the office and taking time out to teach in the academic field encourages the reflective qualities of the profession and allows for broader exploration in the field of Landscape Architecture which is then translated to actual projects. TERRA+ is a team of dynamic people who are passionate about Landscape Architecture and the aesthetics of the environment around them. Projects are tackled as a team with each individual contributing according to their strengths and insights. Every project is considered with people in mind and empathy in design plays a significant role.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Tokai Estate</image:title>
<image:caption>TERRA+ were mandated as part of a design team to develop and implement the landscaping for the proposed development of Tokai Estate. This was an intensive and continuous process where all aspects were considered, including site context, accessibility, needs of the used and sustainability. TERRA+ were involved not only for the soft-landscaping but had input in the hard-landscaping and layout. The design intent was that all roads are pedestrian friendly streets. There was a clear understanding that there would be no sidewalks and people will be dominant of vehicular traffic. This would allow a soft edge of planting to “encroach over the edges and so further soften the street edge and “blur” the defined road edge making cars and driver slightly uncomfortable. This subtle discomfort slows down traffic and allows pedestrians to occupy the streets safely</image:caption>

<image:caption>Tree Planting The street trees were limited to three species. The design intent was to used a combination of decidiuous (Populus simonii) and evergreen(Syzygium cordatum) tree on the main road to provide a sense of avenue all year round. The side roads were planted with a decidious tree species (Celtis sinensis) to provide shade in the summer months and sunlight in winter. Erythrina lysistemon has been planted as a feature tree due to its striking red orange flowers in winter and spring.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The management of storm-water and irrigation should be seen as one system with comprehensive recharge of storm-water and management of best practice irrigation systems to limit transpiration. The rain monitors on the estate help adjusting the day to day irrigation regime to avoid over-watering. The irrigation system is checked regularly to avoid overspraying and bare dry patches. The resilient planting mix will allow for less watering as the plants established.</image:caption>

Nestled on the north-facing slopes of the Vlakkenberg Mountain Ridge, the development orients itself towards the breathtaking views of the pristine Orange Kloof Nature Reserve. <image:caption>The landscape design philosophy meticulously considered the natural patterns of streams and existing tree lines, seamlessly incorporating them into the overall layout. The heart of the design revolves around the rehabilitation of a wetland area, creating an internal space with meandering paths that offer complete freedom to immerse oneself in the natural surroundings. Circulation routes and hard-landscaped elements were purposefully designed to respond to the natural character of Hout Bay, seamlessly blending with the modern architecture.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A moment and time is fleeting, time to say good-bye and accept change. TERRA+ is saying good-bye to two wonderful women. Ayesha Adams who has been with TERRA+ since 2014 and Bonnie Fletcher who joined us in 2015. Both ladies have been invaluable in their contribution to TERRA+ and I wish them all the best. Ayesha has taken a post at the City of Cape Town as part of the growing number of Landscape Architects employed by the city. Bonnie is heading off to Natal and will explore other avenues. They will both be missed, but it is now time for change which is good. Forced to reflect and adjust. It requires resilience, but allows for new ideas and shifts in thinking. Adieu and all the best!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Image courtesy of Herman Lintvelt Terra+ Landscape Architects was appointed by VDMV Property Holdings for a baseline Visual Assessment of Altydgedacht Estate (Farm 18/276) in Durbanville. Visual, scenic, and aesthetic components are valuable resources contributing to the cultural landscape and heritage. The assessment aimed to analyze the site visually to provide indicators for future development. This strategic assessment then informed design guidelines and planning processes, ensuring the conservation of visual environments and mitigating significant visual impacts.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Altydgedacht Visual Analysis</image:title>
<image:caption>The analysis starts with the macro context, exploring the significance of the site within the city context, and then narrows into the local and site context. The environmental, physical and historical context is evaluated at these different scales. Capturing of cultural landscape elements runs parallel to this exercise, as the environment in which the site is located is rich in cultural heritage and scenic significance.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Altydgedacht Visual Analysis</image:title>
<image:caption>In ther macro context, the following insights emerged: The Durbanville Hill Range lies northeast of Cape Town, forming a physical and visual boundary against the flat terrain stretching from Table Mountain Range to the Durbanville hills. Nestled behind these hills, the site enjoys some protection from the harsh west coast climate. Positioned between the N1 and N7 highways, arterial routes connect the site, following natural valleys from east to west. The coastline, approximately 11km away, is visible at this scale, while the Diep River and Kuils River flow parallel on either side of the Durbanville Hill Range, with the site situated on the cooler, less dry eastern side. It sits along a green network extending from the north, comprised of protected reserves, open hillsides, and agriculture. Positioned at the urban-rural interface, at the foot of the Durbanville Hills, the site marks the former urban edge boundary, now blurred as urban development extends northwards.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In the local context analysis, we examined several features, including landform and topography, hydrology, figure-ground relationships, tree patterns, agricultural patterns, natural green areas, and access points. Additionally, we explored a typical representation of a classical landscape and its relevance to the Altydgedacht site.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Altydgedacht Visual Analysis</image:title>
<image:caption>The first figure-ground diagram above reveals the distribution and density of built structures, indicating urban morphologies and rural settlements. The proximity of dense residential areas to rural clusters of farms is depicted, with Altydgedacht Farm boundaries bordering residential suburbs. In the second diagram above it is revealed that linear tree alignments define and frame the landscape, providing edge definition and shelter. Dominant tree avenues mark historical routes, while distinctive tree lines denote property boundaries and follow landform contours. Densely forested areas are present in sheltered valley parts. The large sketch attempts to capture the particular quality of the landscape and the dispersal of settlement. It is a landscape where homesteads and their associated buildings are “tucked” in the landscape, surrounded by agricultural patterns and tree-lines and with mountains forming the backdrop to this rural landscape.</image:caption>

      <image:title>D6 Public Realm Study</image:title>
<image:caption>Terra+ engaged in a methodology for developing a culture and memory strategy for District Six's public space. The process involved desk-based research combined with a public participation initiative, intending to comprehend the area as a cultural landscape. The focus extended beyond heritage indicators of the built environment to acknowledge and highlight the intricate relationships between landscape, people, memories, and intangible heritage. Recognizing the site as a 'Landscape of Memory' facilitated an understanding of the area's sense of place through all the senses, incorporating the sights, sounds, and smells recalled by former inhabitants at various moments in time. Exploring how different communities utilized public spaces and their interconnections revealed a richness and vibrancy of layered, sometimes contested meanings, which serves as inspiration for shaping future public spaces.</image:caption>

      <image:title>D6 Public Realm Study</image:title>
<image:caption>The project celebrates the diverse cultures that once thrived in the area, reinforcing the design for spaces that embrace dynamic cultural diversity. <image:title>D6 Public Realm Study</image:title>
<image:caption>The strategies for engaging with the culture and memory of developing District Six are rooted in integrating, celebrating, preserving, and protecting cultural practices from the past to the present. The objective is to transform the site into a space that unifies restitution and renewal while honoring the past through memory and place-making intricately connected to the area's history. This approach seeks to foster a public realm that not only reflects the vibrant past of District Six but also serves as a meaningful platform for future design and built forms.</image:caption>

<image:caption>SEAFORTH Beach Upgrade is a current project in construction stage. Terra+ is working in collaboration with professionals from the CoCT, and with other consultants (engineers, heritage practitioners, etc.) The intention is to upgrade and rehabilitate soft and hard landscaping of the beach infrastructure, including reconstruction of retaining walls, access footpaths, and specifically constructing all-abled/universal access improvements. Not least important is creating a fun play area for children with play sculptures of ship, penguin and whale tail to serve as informants about the history, past and present, of area. As the site is positioned in a very sensitive ecological area, that includes live penguins!, environmental constraints and monitoring are involved. And being a historic place, archeologic supervision is also in place.</image:caption>

<image:caption>While Seaforth has green grassed terraces and mature palm trees, as well as attractive walking platforms built among the boulders, one of the matters that impacts this today are the terraces which are built of low cement walls capped with sadly shaped steel railings, many bent and rusting. This provides a sense of untidiness and some danger to this beautiful area. The proposal to reconstruct these walls, remove the railing and reuse local stone to enhance the sense of place and continue the old and natural quality of the area, is supported. The proposed works required permission in terms of section 35 of the National Heritage Resources Act, which provides for the protection of archaeological resources.</image:caption>

Further to this concept it is recognized that it is within these outside spaces that social interaction takes place. The design concentrated on promoting and facilitation positive outdoor space.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The proposed development lies in a valley delineated by the rolling hills of Papegaaiberg, composed of malmesbury shale, to the west and the sharp ascent of Stellenbosch Mountain’s table mountain sandstone, to the east. The surrounding lowlands are composed of rich alluvial soils supporting agriculture, primarily viticulture, and are dissected by a prominent water course to the north, the Eerste river and to the south the lesser Blouklip river. As part of the concept development, a visual study and landscape character analysis of the site has been completed. The rural quality of the area and the particular layout of the werf were both qualities that were deemed significant attributes to the site. Further to this the historic tree planting on site (and the visual buffer this provides) is another quality which can be built on and developed further to add to the particular identity and sense of place.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Ecology and People - In all instances where soft-landscaping is applied the recognition of the broader ecology is paramount. The influence of ecology on the daily life should be celebrated and the diversity of various ecosystems on the site must be enhanced and developed. It should be understood that the health of the micro system is dependant on the health of the macro system and visa-versa. Maintenance then becomes self evident and the strategy to retain and maintain verges and other green spaces are crucial for a sustainable and resilient landscape. Where erven are adjacent to the river corridor, meadow or forest, the interface must be managed with long-term landscape strategies to retain the natural interactions of a healthy ecology. This may require certain erven to have a ecological servitude as an extension to the erf boundary.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Another aspect of the design was to respond to the context of a rural setting, with the inclusion of foraging gardens and a large portion of permaculture gardens. The design was centered around a central space with a firepit, and we used planting areas and pergolas as devices to create out-door “rooms”. All the spaces were then interlinked with pathways creating continuous experience of the landscape. The plant material was all endemic or indigenous which further strengthened the connection to the context of the Stellenbosch mountains and fynbos biome</image:caption>

This project was initiated by the City of Cape Town to address the deteriorated state of the square and to restore its significance as a vibrant community hub. Bonteheuwel Freedom Square holds a pivotal place in history, being designated as a Provincial Heritage Site on 28 September 2020. The square is a symbol of resilience, having played a role in political activism during the apartheid era.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The project's design and public participation process was initially done by by Tarna Klitzner Landscape Architects, and further developed up to construction phase by Terra+ Landscape Architects. The design maintains a cohesive language throughout the space, including a well-thought-out paving scheme that guides visitors from the Library's entrance through the site, connecting different areas and functions. The Old Library Staircase and existing trees were preserved, and over sixty indigenous trees and various hardy plant species were integrated.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Art plays a crucial role in the project's identity. Local artist Lorenzo Nassimbeni facilitated workshops with children to create art pieces embedded in the flooring of the central oval gathering space. These art pieces radiate from the center and extend to a security screen for the Library. Two murals on adjacent building walls were also created under Lorenzo's guidance by local artists. The art elements extend to the playground, with painted stepping stones showcasing the project's yellow, blue, and red color palette.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Molslang Timber Boardwalk, a project currently in its conceptual design phase, will be an addition to Westridge Park in Cape Town as part of the comprehensive Westridge Park upgrade. A new boardwalk is proposed for the Biodiversity Dune, replacing the existing boardwalk, that will be universally accessible for all users of the park. The name of this boardwalk has been termed ‘The Molslang’ which is fitting given the habitat of the Mole Snake in sandy, scrub-like environments like Westridge Park. The characteristic nature of the molslang is in contrast to the ‘Boomslang’, whose habitat is above ground in the tree canopies. This proposed boardwalk system will mimic the molslang which moves across and underground, occasionally suspending itself above the ground as it moves over the terrain.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Westridge Molslang</image:title>
<image:caption>The landscape around the new EEC building will play an important role in a variety of ways. On the ground floor, the building is designed to open out onto the external space to the south, creating an extension to the internal gathering and learning spaces. Low seat walls opposite will provide an edge to this hard space and opportunities for artistic mosaics or murals that link to environmental educational themes. The ground plain will be a combination of patterned paving and pebble mosaics that will envoke interest, encourage gathering, guide movement and slow vehicular traffic across the space.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Westridge Molslang</image:title>
<image:caption>Inspired by the Molslang snake’s form and movement, the boardwalk replicates its behaviour through four ground conditions: In the Earth: Seamlessly integrated into the landscape, held by retaining seat walls with scenic viewpoints. Hovering Close to the Earth: Certain sections float slightly above the ground, providing a unique experience. Elevation Above the Earth: Some parts elevate significantly, conveying the snake’s underground movement through creative floor textures. Implied Underground: Areas where the boardwalk is entirely underground, suggested only by the textured flooring.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Westridge Molslang</image:title>
<image:caption>The ‘tail end’ of the walkway will end outside the first floor entrance to the EEC building. From here it ramps down the northern dune and crosses the shared movement/ circulation route. At this intersection, the route will be on grade with the roadway, and then rise on the opposite side on the southen/ biodiversity dune. The walkway will undulate both in width and height off the ground in a series of ramps and level platforms. The gradual incline will reach the apex of the dune where the Molslang boardwalk will terminate in a wide view platform with the ‘head’ enclosed below a shade structure.</image:caption>

A combination of recycled timber or plastic ‘polyplank’ decking and structural members that will be supported by concrete footings and line up against concrete seat/ retaining walls. The ground plain will be a combination of patterned paving and pebble mosaics that will envoke interest, encourage gathering, guide movement and slow vehicular traffic across the space. The building will be ‘anchored’ into the dune, with dune vegetation and trees planted around its’ perimeter to assist with softening the built form, and providing a physical buffer.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Molslang Walkway (for elaborated concept see: Westridge Park, Molslang Concept Design) A new boardwalk is proposed for the Biodiversity Dune that will be universally accessible for all users of the park.

<image:caption>Biodiversity Dune The existing identified ‘Biodiversity Dune’, south of the proposed EEC, is approximately 80% covered by local indigenous dune vegetation. The remaining 20% has open bare embankments, prodominantly below the existing mature tree canopies where shade is not condusive to Dune Strandveld growing conditions. These shady areas to receive indigenous plant species that can grow suitably in the shade on sandy banks. The following planting strategies are proposed around and on the dune: a. Plant infill into existing dune vegetation areas. Planting of new species between existing to improve diversity. b. New planting to the lower embankments. Remove existing kikuyu lawn from lower west facing slopes and replant with variety of dune vegetation. c. Swale planting. Introduce species suitable for wetter areas that would commonly be found in ‘Dune Slacks’ in undisturbed environments. These species will assist with water filtration.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Outdoor Classrooms In the sheltered valley between the existing dunes is the proposed location for the main outdoor classroom. The fairly level space and the existing Ficus tree providing shade, also contribute to this site selection. The space can be accessed from any direction, and directly up to the Molslang walkway. The space will be edged by low seat walls that will be a continuation of material and theme used elsewhere.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Kruskal Avenue</image:title>
<image:caption>The Kruskal Avenue Upgrade is an urban regeneration project essential to address the need for improved investor confidence, enhanced access to public transportation, and increased pedestrian safety in this bustling precinct, offering benefits such as enhanced commuter safety through plaza design at roadway intersections, improved street lighting, and the retention of existing street trees, ultimately contributing to the comfort and well-being of pedestrians while stimulating economic growth. The core concept behind the design revolved around establishing a cohesive street environment that signified a shift from the traditional vehicle-centric road to a vibrant pedestrian-focused area. To realise this vision, one idea involved replacing all asphalt surfaces with a diverse palette of clay brick pavers, demonstrating the commitment to a more people-oriented and pedestrianised space.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Kruskal Avenue</image:title>

      <image:title>Kruskal Avenue</image:title>
<image:caption>What distinguishes this project is its transformation of the pedestrianised route into vibrant hubs of human interaction, departing from their previous vehicle-centric functions, and the thoughtful integration of an established network of street traders into a redesigned arrangement of standardized trader bays, interspersed with a combination of existing and newly planted trees, along with public seating and street lighting.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The landscape design for this project has developed from the City of Cape Town’s initial Landscape Master Plan, dated January 2022. The ethos of the upgrade, as described by the City of Cape Town: “the design aims to maximize space for recreational use, both active (play area and walkways) and passive (seating opportunities), while upgrading aging infrastructure".</image:caption>

<image:caption>Within the central node, and at the station forecourt, formal paved banding will be reintroduced using similar paving colours that currently exist in the central space. The new bands of approximately 1m in width will comprise a combination of ‘De Hoop Red’, ‘De Hoop Burgundy’/ ‘Nutmeg’ or similar, and a darker clay brick, ‘Onyx’ or similar charcoal colour paver. The ‘Onyx’ colour will be picked up again in thinner band patterns within court spaces.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The main beach shower will be reconstructed and positioned at the centre of this space. <image:caption>The station forecourt on the east side of the railway line will be upgraded. New paved surfaces will provide a welcoming and safe pedestrian space and enhance the context to the historic railway station building. Paving patterns will complement existing and new alignments of the building and coastal steps and provide clear distinction between the pedestrian and vehicular zones. Lighting and street furniture will follow the new paved grid layout and guide vehicular movement across the space without interrupting pedestrian movement and gathering.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Physical connection and access will also be improved by converting the coastal defence infrastructure into a stepped revetment, which will combine steps and several ramps that will connect the different levels of the site to the beach.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The layout of the upgraded play area will represent a coastal tidal zone with ‘dune’, ‘beach’, ‘rock pools’ and ‘sea’. These themes will be represented by the pattern and colour of surface materials and play structures. A raised berm positioned along the back of the play area, between Beach Road parking and the play area, will be planted with a mixture of low Cape Flats Dune Strandveld species. This planted ‘dune’/ berm, will also provide a physical barrier to assist with safety of keeping children away from the road edge. Natural rock will be integrated throughout the play area, in the form of large stones for seating, stepping/ hopping, and flat smaller stone set in the surface for skipping and colour/ material interest.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Muizenberg concept design</image:title>
<image:caption>The variety of play structures will also represent the coastal theme and be abstract forms of living creatures. For example, the octopus activity gym, the sea anemone and kelp forest, as shown on the concept drawings. Timber log and rope netting will be the predominant material used and designed in different combinations of shapes and forms to encourage exploration and fun.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Muizenberg concept design</image:title>
<image:caption>New clay brick paving is proposed between the promenade and the parking/ road edge. Most of the existing beachfront paved spaces will be impacted on by the project construction, and therefore where possible, existing clay brick paving will be lifted, stockpiled, and then reused in the new paving design layout. Priority is to ensure integration of new paving with existing, and a seamless transition. A combination of different coloured clay brick paving has been specified for pedestrian and vehicular spaces, with exception to the concrete promenade which has a warm textured finish as specified by the Coastal Engineers.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Muizenberg concept design</image:title>
<image:caption>Between the central node, the station forecourt and the pavilion, the paving layout will follow a tidal/ wave ripple pattern that resembles and mimics the ocean movement along the coast. A darker clay paver is proposed to demarcate the ripple edge, and form an organic and continuous line along the paved beachfront. This pattern will integrate the different spaces along the beach edge, and introduce a new, playful and contemporary element to the hard landscaping.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Muizenberg concept design</image:title>
<image:caption>Planting beds along the central beachfront will be upgraded and enhanced with additional endemic coastal species. The species proposed are a combination of low succulent groundcovers, coastal shrubs, and some dune/ sand tolerant grasses. Undulating/ shaped planting medium can provide opportunities for mini representations of dune habitats, with wetland type sedges planted in low lying dips, and succulent groundcovers and grasses at higher edges. The intention is to create dense planting that can cover the soil/ sand and be robust enough to withstand some trampling. Where views are important from restaurants across to the beach, the height of shrubs will be limited to 0.5m. However, taller shrubs will be introduced to assist with softening hard edges or facades.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In contrast to the well-defined Upper Campus, the Middle and Lower Campus faces spatial challenges characterized by a lack of clear planning and connectivity. Heritage assessments, though cautious, have contributed to an ill-defined campus layout with low bulk and a loose fabric, making navigation complex. Furthermore, essential features, such as Japonica Walk, have experienced deterioration. Unlike the Upper Campus, the Middle-Lower Campus lacks a clear heart or nucleus, resulting in structures and spaces with limited legible connectivity. The campus is underutilized, and there is a need for a comprehensive approach to revitalizing this academic space.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Image courtesy of Herman Lintvelt The proposed development lies in the valley created by the rolling hills of Malmesbury shale, with the Elsieskraal river as the prominent stream trans versing the site. As part of the concept development a visual study and landscape character analysis has been done on the site . The rural quality of the area and the particular layout of the werf were both qualities that were deemed attributes to the site. Further to this the extensive tree planting on site and the visual buffer this provides is another quality which can be built on and developed further to add to the particular identity and sense of place.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Altydgedacht Framework plan</image:title>
<image:caption>The site boasts lush tree planting, meadows, and vineyards. Unlike conventional farming methods, trees are organically clustered, with straight entrance avenues. Walkways offer diverse angles and natural routes, except for entry roads. Access to the river and ecological paths is neglected. Forests and tree arrangements lack coherence, with existing pastures for livestock. Enhancing forest quality and the river corridor can elevate the site's attractiveness. Meadows and open spaces can function as ecological corridors and amenities, rather than maintenance burdens.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The main ideas behind the design proposal focus on structuring spaces for a distinct character. Leveraging natural and urban systems enriches the identity. Recognizing site features like drainage lines offers opportunities for a comprehensive green system, enhancing the development's sense of place. Detailed design of development pockets adds individual character to each area, addressing various aspects of the proposal.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Altydgedacht Framework plan</image:title>
<image:caption>In principle the site should be pedestrian friendly and conducive to comfortable and accessible spaces for people. The design intent of all the public green spaces is to have these integrated in the overall design and accessible for everyone.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The site is trans-versed by the Elsieskraal river which is currently overgrown and under-utilised. The river is one of the most valuable assets and potential amenities for the proposed development and requires rehabilitation to a more natural state, closer to an functional, healthy ecological system. The success of this will determine the future use and potential of this amenity and positive connection to the broader context.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Altydgedacht Framework plan</image:title>
<image:caption>An important aspect of the farm and the rural nature is the presence of meadows edged by the clusters of trees and forest. From the major approach road, farm buildings and dwellings are seen in the distance with the fields and meadows in the foreground. This is one of the strong landscape typologies that provides such a strong rural character to the site. As with the river corridor and development of the ecological corridors, this aspect must be upgraded to become a real amenity for the property.</image:caption>
